Rylee Anderson, a five-time Big 12 Conference champion and six-time NCAA Division 1 All-American at Kansas, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss making her international debut Nov. 4 for the United States in the women's high jump at the Pan American Games at the Julio Martinez Pradanos National Stadium in Santiago, Chile. Anderson is representing the Americans in the event, along with Rachel McCoy. Both athletes are seeking the first Pan American Games medal for the United States in the women's high jump since 1995, as well as pursuing the first title by an American since 1987. She reflects on going through team processing in July after taking third at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and examines the reality of being able to compete for the first time in 120 days. Anderson explains her post-collegiate move to live and work in Austin, Texas, and shares her experiences in recent months as a physical therapy technician, in addition to how beneficial it has been to be able to have access to the facilities as an athlete. She analyzes the shift in training from being part of a successful group at Kansas to working out alone at local schools in Austin, and being able to communicate virtually with Jayhawks jumps coach Tom Hays, who continues to coordinate Anderson's workouts as a professional athlete. Anderson speaks about how significant it has been to return to Kansas on several occasions to train with coach Hays, and highlights her meaningful trip in September, when she was recognized as the Jayhawks Female Athlete of the Year across all sports at the annual Rock Chalk Choice Awards. She shares her excitement for being able to compete in Chile, and talks about how valuable the opportunity to represent the United States is this year in preparation for her pursuit of qualifying for the Paris Olympics in 2024. Anderson also explains the inspiration she has gained from watching her collegiate peers, such as fellow American athlete Jenna Rogers, along with Texas A&M star Lamara Distin representing Jamaica and Georgia standout Elena Kulichenko competing for Cyprus, and how they have all excelled at the international level in the women's high jump. And she motivation to secure a medal for the Americans and potentially challenge for the gold medal in Santiago.
